What's it all about then

After almost a thousand posts, Wino sapien now has a certain cohesion and form which allows me to make a few explanatory comments.

Navigation. If you are looking around for the first time, you will find in the side bar, on the right of the screen, links to some excellent wine and non wine blogs, together with internal links to a short list of my Wino thoughts, as well as a much longer alphabetical list of wine tasting notes. There is also a growing list of wine friendly recipes for those interested in food and plonk.

Why? Given the amount of wine I drink and time I spend at the keyboard, this is a question I commonly get asked. The answer I might give varies from day to day and with my mood. At the heart of things though, is the need to have my own soapbox and the wish to be somehow involved with the Internet.

Who? I'm fast approaching 40, married and have two beautiful children. My main calling in life is medicine, but for the last decade my main obsession has been wine. It was not always so. Wine was absent from my life until my mid twenties, and early on, it was an ambivalent relationship. It was something to be consumed only occasionally, and often with variable results. Gradually my experiences became more positive and inspiring, I began actively seeking out particular bottles of wine (and the company of like minded souls) and eventually I started reading and hoarding. By 1999 I had all the signs and symptoms of a classifiable disorder. . .

Reviews: 99% of what I drink and write about is purchased with my own money. I tend to be selective about what I drink and so the reviews you read are likely to be skewed to particular styles of wine.

What do I like? When it comes to wine, my love is eclectic. I think style needs to be countered with substance; and balance is no good without refreshment. As in life, I try to avoid dogma, gimmick and repetition.

An invitation. Read the blog, look around, tell your friends and feel free to leave spam free comments for me to find.

I think its about time you got your own site, all this organisation looks painful...

I tossed up the idea of using blogger for a while, but it was just too hard to organise and run. Come'on, you deserve it!

Dave,

Thanks for the suggestion. Have been toying with the idea for several months, but being a natural procrastinator I think I will wait and see what blogger 2 looks like first.

I think I have finally finished the organisational bits so now I can get back on the turps!

Goodness, as one new to blogger and, sometimes, moderately pleased with my words I've been very humbled by your writing, drinking, note-taking, commitment, proclivity and overall better-ness.

actually your blog has just opened up a veritable pandora's box of better-ness. I'm so overwhelmed I may have to stop writing just in case....

Thanks Rawshank,

Good luck on the blog, I had a browse earlier on today. What's behind the name?

The Northcote Red Star? Good question. Originally I wanted it to sound like an eastern European soccer team (locamotive Moscow, Red Star Belgrade etc) but I then realised it sounded a bit too much like it's the Socialist Party Wine Club. I might change it, I might not. My mind changes like the victorian weather ;)

I've been blogging for the last six months and I'm in the process of 'making an effort'. Any tips gratefully accepted
