Casa Santos Lima Quinta Das Setencostas Alenquer 2005
Alenquer, Estremadura, Portugal. Periquita, Camarate, Tinta Miuda, Preto Martinho. 13% alcohol. Cork. Approx $A20.
The dynamic duo behind Catavino, Ryan and Gabriella are hosting WBW#38. This is my entry. Portuguese table wine still has a very low profile in Australia and this was the only bottle I could find after several weeks of haphazard, poorly organised searching. It is made of four grapes I have never previously tried or heard of and hails from the Western edge of Portugal.
Simple and delightful. Cherry, malt, raspberry and wilted leaf. This is not dissimilar to a fresh new season Tempranillo. It has lovely texture and flesh and the fruit is juicy, bright and direct. The tannins are notably dry and lip smacking and there is again a hint of wilted leaf and tobacco to end.
Very good.
16.5/20 (88/100).
Now - 2010.

But Ed!
what about the 'big picture'.... how is global warming going to affect alcoholics like yourself? won't all the good wine-growing regions be stuffed ?
p.s. DOOM! we're all DOOMED i tells ya!
Grant
Grant,
What are character you are! I thought the 5 of us had worked out a plan to save the world the other night :)
I know of at least one vineyard owner in a previously marginal (too cold) site who is rather thrilled by the notion of warming...
It (global warming) is given as one of the possible reasons for why wine is becoming more alcoholic.
This seems to be a fairly odd ball wine. Sound good though
There is a bit of an influx of Portuguese stuff of late, maybe they haven't made it to WA yet?
Dave,
I should have looked at La Vigna - which tends to have the best range, but I ran out of time. It will be interesting to observe how well Portuguese wines do in Australia. I think the odd varietals and unknown regions won't help the cause.
