Domaine Blain Gagnard Chassagne Montrachet 2005

Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy, France. 13.3% alcohol. Cork. Half bottle.

I love small format bottles. They give the illusion of responsible drinking and fiscal rectitude. . .

A transient flourish of grilled peach and flint before a more subdued and sustained melon. Pleasingly textured, with a combination of fatty comfort and almond meal richness before a tight and lingering seam of mouthwatering acidity. Whilst this has lovely poise and balance, it is a teasing wine that hints, but never quite delivers.

Very good - excellent.
92.
Now - 2012.

May 2009 tasting note.

Edward..the 2005 White Burgundies are going to be teasers for a year or two..a recent Chablis was similar..decanting helps..but bottle age will show these wines to be of a great vintage...trouble is..are the pockets deep enough

Barry,

Sounds like good advice. I will try to sit tight on what I have left.

Fortunately, I've been rather slow off the mark on 05 Burgundies. THe only place in town with a reliable supply has sold out of almost everything (so my pockets should be safe). Though he told me Rousseau are ominously still to arrive. . . Must try to hide and avoid reading all suspicious emails :)

I think you're spot on Ed. Looking back in my notes in the '04 this is a rather austere wine with ample acid and minerality and relatively little overt stonefruit characters, even more so in '05. It undoubtedly will open up in the next couple of years or so although this teasing aspect is quintessential Burgundy. If you like fruit - I mean fruit - drink Leeuwin Art series, if you like subtility drink this, now or later.

Mo,

Wise words. Maybe I will open a LEAS over Christmas to compare to the recent run of White Burgundies that I have had.
