Bindi Block 5 Pinot Noir 2006

Macedon, Victoria. 13.5%. Diam. Approx $A88.

From a warm, dry and early season comes a wine that will be slow to show its true grace and charm.

Seemingly more reserved and needing a little more patience than it's older and very accomplished sibling. This is lovely, bright and fleshy, though there is some sternness and chalk to the tannins. To this observer it looks unfiltered and smells of stewed strawberries, sap and stalk. Inviting and lush there's a cascade of rose petal and Turkish delight before the fine, well formed tannins.

Excellent.

Anything with the word 'Bindi' In scares me.

That's quite a review (Turkish Delight?!). I can't find much info on this winery - do they have a website? It's a very small production house, correct? Love the photo.

Barbara and Joe,

Bindi are one of my favourite local producers, small but terrific wines. The wines have a certain finesse and grace.

The presentation and the marketing effort is particularly idiosyncratic. The name Bindi, I guess relates to the Dhillon's (the family behind the winery) Indian heritage. The man on the label, is Kostas Rind (a mathmatician) who was a mentor to the family. Clearly they are making the wine they want, as their marketing is certainly not aimed at the middle. They can afford such quirkiness, as their wines sing the Siren's song.

Thanks for the explanation Ed. My comment was a joke. You knew that, right? I'm sure Bindi Irwin is not making wine...yet.

Seriously, I must try the wine.

Barbara,

I thought you were joking, but at same time I thought your comment was very perceptive. Especially as I sometimes wonder about how they present their wines to market (sorry for the serious tone of my initial reply).

Bindi is increasingly associated with (even in my wino mind) Bindi Irwin. I wonder if there will come a time when a name change is considered by the winery?

Sounds fantastic. And yes, love the photo.

I've been trying to collect a few Australian Pinots lately so I can do a bit of a tasting in the near future. Hopefully I'll find at least one wine this good.

Edward have you tried/heard of anything about the 07s? I can see trickles of the composition being let out... with the Original Vineyard and Block 5s in October. I love Bindi (not the Irwin) and have been super impressed with them. Had the Original Vineyard PN 06 in Tetsuya's for not much more than retail price, and was blown away by the purity. Now it's just a matter of the dollars.

Pluggin,

I recall reading about the 07 vintage, but can't recall the exact words used. Something along the lines of challenging, but wines of great character. . .

I am interested to see how the (frosty) 07 Victorian Pinots fare. There has been 2 excellent vintages - 05 was superb for Macedon (from what I have tasted) and 06 excellent for Mornington and Yarra (again from what I have tasted).

Depending on my finances, I plan to purchase the 07 Block 5 and Quartz and will post notes later in the year.

Hmm challenging!! Thats a tricky word when one is parting with large sums of cash as is the case with Bindi. Will you be purchasing any Compositions or Original Vineyard, because that's more what my finances are capable of. I'm a huge fan of Victorian wines and 90% of what I drink comes from Vic, but have heard mixed things about 07s. that said the Hoddles Creek chardonnay is awesome. Felton Rd 07s are still disjointed.

Hi Edward,

First post here, and would like to commend you on your site - insightful reviews, lovely photography, and an interesting mix of wines!

Have you had a chance to try to 07 Bindi wines? Would love to know your take. I think I tasted the Original Block a few months ago - my first Bindi, and was really taken aback by the beautiful core of delicate, perfectly ripened fruit.

Jon,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and for reading.

Ordinarily, I would have tried the latest release by now, but for some reason I was not sent the latest offer. I assume Bindi have decided to drop me from the mailing list. . .

Michael from Bindi here.

A link here was just emailed to me.

Edward, not sure why you would have been dropped off. Change of address of some glitch here maybe. Please visit bindiwines.com.au to re join if you wish.

All the best,
Michael

Michael,

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and explanation. In retrospect it was probably fortuitous, as I was broke around the time of the August / September 08 Bindi offer.

Regards,

Edward.
