Cape Mentelle Chardonnay 2006

It's not easy writing tasting notes. I used to find it easier when I started. Now the problem is repetition and cliché. The dilemma is even more acute when it comes to different vintages of the same wine, especially from areas seemingly blessed with consistent weather.

This afternoon I tried the Cape Mentelle Chardonnay. A wine I have consumed with pleasure on and off for over a decade. It tasted like a Cape Mentelle Chardonnay. Powerful and textured and yet laden with acidity and possessing a lovely line. I feel too lazy and bored to point out the flavours that seem to be there each year. As to quality, I think it is close to excellent, and on a par with the previous vintage. For the numerically minded. 94. Now - 2013+

So right, Edward. I find myself at pains over the constant use of words like nose, palate, finish, etc., yet without getting overly contrived or dumbing things down (or stopping with tasting notes...) there's not really any good way around it. So keep it up, my friend.

I agree on that, it has hard to write about 30 differrent Riojas or 30 different MR chardies. I'm trying to include more of the mouthfeel and structure characters in my notes, not sure if it really works tho. I think this is something that Burghound does really well, and that parker and co doesn't.

I think you're doing a good job, I like reading them on the site here.

Tsk Tsk Eduardo. You are a creative chap and more than up to the task...
This wine is cooler and more crystalline in nature than the last don't you think?

David, Dave and GW

Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

I'll do some more 'practice' over the Easter weekend!

I think mouth feel and structure are things I try to convey as well, but again I tend to find I use a similar range of descriptors. If only I could be like GW :)

Gary, I'll have to try both again in the near future, side by side. To me they seemed quite similar, but the bottle of 05 I had, was 12 months earlier.

Ed..
I find the 'secret' of good blogging..and 'repetition & cliches' is to do exactly what you did..tell a small story...and you can only post what you taste.
The other option is to stop drinking for 6 months..then it will all be fresh again.

I have decided on my choice...

It is refreshing to find folks who really do stand out as pathetic. I often deal with people who are in desperate need of assistance and no matter how dire their circumstances, they are doing better than wine bloggers.

One of my all time favourites, keep taking the tablets!

Anon,

Wine tasting can be insular and open to parody, nothing is original about that. At least have the conviction to leave a name next time. . .

Edward, you make a valid point about the parody. I shall give your moniker suggestion due consideration...it is done.
