Lucien Muzard et fils Santenay 'Champs Claude' 2005

Santenay, Burgundy, France. 13%. Pinot noir. Cork. Approx $A50

A joyous wine.

Beautifully coloured, vibrant and giving. Enticing and pure nose with cherry and a background note of sap and char. Light, silken and lush, this is love at first sip. Supple and delightful, the harsh might say this lacks weight, depth and line. Whilst I can concede some of this, I would thoroughly recommend this modestly priced, exceedingly lovely and velvet like Burgundy.

Very good - excellent.
93.
Now - 2010.

Good to see you join the Pinot Pilgrimage....
The 'lesser' Burgundies from 2005 up to now have been very impressive generally..and are affordable.
Forgot what the harsh say Ed..this is sex in a glass....as a doctor..I hope it is safe!!!

Barry,

Such a way with words! I think the ideal approach is to drink as many of the cheaper, less regarded 05 Burgs, while waiting for the more pedigreed ones to mature. Will uncork a few more in the coming weeks.

Hi Ed - I have had a ton of great '05s from the lesser terroirs - a great vintage, definitely drink those now. I have saved an '05 Clos Vougeot for the when you and Barry make it to Montreal and we seal the deal. Sex and glass?! Must be a German thing..;)

A thoughtful and perceptive note. I have a few 05's sitting, but only a couple drinkable now. I should get on that and try to somehow be as emotive in my tasting notes!

I...didn't know it was a "lesser" burgundy. I love this wine. It's been the compagnon of many interminable family diners.

Hi Ed,

Can I ask where you managed to pick this up?

A shop near my place has plenty of the 2004's which got 86pts from burghound... as a point of comparison do you know what score he gave this one?

Mike,

This was from the Beaufort St Merchant. Not sure if they have any left though. Not sure of the Burghound score either, I'd assume it would be in the 86-89 range. . .
