Clonakilla Riesling 2008

Canberra, Australia. Riesling. 12.5%. Screwcap. Approx $A25.

My tasting notes are shrinking. . . I started this note with 18 descriptors, but in the end cut and culled leaving only 7. It seems appropriate for a wine with such focus and line, and so much life affirming and enamel stripping acidity. . .

This is a very good riesling (perhaps as good as 05 and better than 06 and 07). Smelling of flint, exotic bath salts and citrus blossom this is mineral and precise, delicate and textured.

Very good - excellent.
93.
Now - 2018.

There is an interesting article on Australian Riesling in the Wall Street Journal's on line edition.

In my part of the U.S. any Australian Riesling is difficult to find, but those I've managed to find have been very good.

Andrew,Any particular favourites so far? Dan,Thanks for the link, I've generally been scanning the wsj for bad news of late, so it was a refreshing change. It was a well balanced assessment, and it's pleasing to see Aussie riesling doing well/better in the US. The Pewsey Vale Prima they mention is terrific. For some reason the link you provided got truncated, so for the interested here is the link again

Exotic bath salts?! Should I ask? By the way, I have two vintages of the Henschke Riesling that we could "synchronize" (I'll never find this one here)

Canberra Riesling is a new one on me, and I don't actually think I've ever drank any of their wine - although I've a couple of hilltops in what I pass off as a cellar

Edward - is this drinking well now and does it have a long life ahead of it?

Try the 08 Ravensworth Riesling & particlarly the 2008 Helm Rieslings - the 08 Helm Premium Riesling is a stunning wine that would rival our nations best.
(Caveat: I am a massive Riesking fan).

Awesome! I have 6 in the cellar which I haven't touched and I so much enjoyed the 06 and 07, so this will be a joy.

Joe I didn't enjoy the Henschke at all when I had it recently. It had too much powder and talc, where was the acidity I don't know. Plus it totally faded away beside my Thai dinner which is a pretty glum thing for a riesling.

Edward thanks for the WSJ link -- what critters on labels are they talking bout?!?

Andrew,

Oh no, more wine suggestions :) Good thing it is riesling weather.

Joe,

I've printed out the shopping list, will see what I can find.

Rawshank,

I love my riesling young, but I think this is a keeper.

Pluggin,

I'm sure there must be some critter label riesling out there somewhere!

Ed - you now have my entire cellar, hope it helps! Pluggin - what year was that Henschke that you didn't like? I'm kinda partial to talc, but the no acid is worrisome.

Joe I'm sure it was the current vintage as I picked it up from a bottle shop w a high turnover.
