Chateau Léoville Barton 1997

St Julien, Bordeaux, France. Cabernet blend. 12.5%. Cork. Source: Brother in law (J).

Despite smelling slightly stinky and reductive, this is still youthful and full of vigour. Dried herbs and violets soon emerge and persist (even as a I sniff the empty bottle it is perfumed and pretty). In the mouth it is texture, grip and well judged acidity. Certainly not profound, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Finishes with competent, meaty, soy and malt flavoured tannins.

Very good.

Nice shot, Edward. Left Bank '97s, from a very underrated and correspondingly good value year, have been drinking well of late. I find that herbal touch you mentioned to be attractive, and the wines tend to be much more food friendly than those from bigger, riper vintages.

Happy holidays, by the way.

David,

Hope you are well.

The bottom of the bottle is a view I've been enjoying a lot lately. . . Agree about the wine, a terrific drinking and eating wine.
