Wynns Black Label 1999

Coonawarra, South Australia. Cabernet sauvignon. 13.5%. Cork. Source: Cellar.

Rather than a picture of the bottle, I thought I'd show the meal that accompanied the wine. A few clichés are on the plate; a medium rare T-Bone and a salad of barely cooked asparagus* and baby peas tossed in fresh mint** and lemon juice.

Smells and tastes like a Wynns Black label (dusty, herbal and serious). Though it is much more generous than the slightly hard 94 and more enjoyable than my poorly cellared bottle from the cool year of 96. In terms of quality, weight and outlook it seems most related to the 04.

Very good.
92.

More recent Black labels: 03/05.

* The smell of fresh asparagus (and peas) always reminds me of Sauvignon blanc, one of Cabernet sauvignon's parents.
** Coonawarra Cabernet can sometimes remind me of my drawer of herbs and spices, in particular the scent of bay leaf and dried mint.
