Domaine Auguste Clape Le Vin des Amis 2007
Northern Rhône, France. Syrah. 12%. Cork. Approx $A50
A gorgeous wine. Fragrant, chiseled and chewy. Spice, musk and raw minced meat, but in time this becomes sappy and earthy. It reminds me a little of Burgundy with its suggestion of geosmin and freshly turned earth. Rounded to begin before showing its sinew and teeth. The structure and grip is quite something, a show of virility, with the chalky, meat like tannins giving a pleasing toughness.
Very good - excellent.
92.
Now - 2014.

I didn't know Clape made this wine. Is it made from declassified fruit? Sounds delicious.
Shea,
Good question, I've no idea where the fruit is from...
you don't usually see Vin de Table at 50$, nor a Syrah at 12% - I would have thought soft, flabby, but clearly not the case here - did you decant? Cellar temp?
Joe: Clape's Cote du Rhone is a good 50-70% more expensive than most, but well worth it - a special producer imo, although I have not had this particular wine.
Joe and Shea,
My whole house is like a cellar at the moment, with the temperature sitting at about 16 degrees C. So almost perfect serving temperature. 12% sounds very light for a shiraz, but this did not lack stuffing or impact. I finished over 2 nights, so in a way a very long decant :)
I've also got some of the Cote du Rhone that Shea mentions and it is around the $90 mark in Australia. Not cheap, but I think worthwhile.
I had the 2002 of this and it wasn't able to overcome the vintage. The 2007 sounds like a very different wine!
cheers
Carl
$90 woha! It's $40 here in what I thought was overpriced BC! These aussie prices are crazy. Clape's full blooded Cornas is $80 here!
Shea,
You have no excuses then! I thought I was getting a 'bargain' because the last time I looked (2005 vintage) the Clape Cote du Rhone was selling for just over $100!
