Borie de Maurel Belle de Nuit 2007
Minervois, Languedoc, France. Grenache. 14.5%. Cork. Approx $A35.
I went wine shopping last week and found this hidden amongst the expensive bottles at the back of the shop. I picked it up on spec, thinking it would be rustic and honest. It's quite delicious. A wine with a pretty nose and suntanned body. Vibrant and fresh to start, with boiled lollies and raspberry. By nights end it has a more herbal note (dried oregano and bay) along with a trace of tar. Round and fleshy in attack, it is mouth-filling and warming. Languid and uncoiled, it eventually tightens and finishes with a streak of chalk and slightly inky tannins.
Very good.

Yep I liked this one as well. Drank it in just over an hour so didn't see it develop but it was good while it lasted.
cheers

Griff,
I'm assuming we got this from the same place (Shenton Park), was there anything else that caught your fancy?
I just tried a 2007 Leflaive Macon that they still have stocks of. Chalk to the 2006 version. Very worthwhile.
Yet to see many 2007 S. Rhones but they did have some 2007 Bonnefond Cote Roties that were tempting me. I ended up buying that last of the Taylor's 2005 Vargellas 750's along with some Clonakilla 2008. I was late for the 2007 release and yet to send in for the 2008 yet this price it works out somewhat cheaper than cellar door. Swings and Roundabouts.
Hard to think of anything else and that is a good thing. There was the 20% off at Re store as well and I have depleted my pocket money.
On the other hand I have seen 2000 Dom. Chevalier Rouge at a very good price in Nedlands....
cheers

Griff,
I bought some more of the 08 Clonakillas too, even though I bought 4 from the mailing list.
I gather they are keeping the 30% discount till January. . .
I had a pop at this one too from Shenton Park but found it a bit unbalanced and just too herby and bitter for my liking. Fortuitously, I only grabbed one to try it and round out the dozen!
However, I did pick up a few other offerings including a 2005 Chateau Brown, some 07 Chablis and 05 Rhones.
Cheers
Dave
Dave,
I wonder if the bottle had been open for a while. I found the same herbal notes by the end of the night. A good pizza / lamb chop / mid week wine. . .
Nope, just popped and poured. Maybe should have decanted it.
Cheers
Dave
