Mount Trio Pinot noir 2007

Porongurup, Great Southern, Western Australia. Pinot noir. 13.5%. Approx $A20. Screwcap.

The last pinot noir I tried from this part of the world was four times the price and had a lovely combination of tightness and give. I was curious to see how this more modestly priced bottled compared. . .

Cherry liqueur and sap, as well the scent of the Australian bush (dried eucalyptus leaves, earth). Quite full, this seems bigger than the stated 13.5. Forward, and rich, this reminds me of Central Otago in its emphasis, it tapers and leaves a suggestion of Balsamic and malt (which I like, but which seems out of place).

Very good.

Pinot from down under has still yet to make an honest impression on me. This one sounds interesting from a wine geeks standpoint because of the "Aussie Terroir" like the eucalyptus and stuff, but is that what we want out of Pinot Noir. Perhaps because Pinot is such a transparent variety it shows a bit too much of that powerful Aussie soil and thats why I don't care for it so much...

Thomas,

I wonder if your feeling of being underwhelmed is related to what sort of pinot leaves our shores. The best producers are small and best bottles are generally all snapped up locally. . .

Your question about what we want out of pinot is an excellent one. Personally I want perfume, softness in the mouth and a sensation that the wine is blooming as a swallow. If you add a well proportioned shape, spine and flow I'm sure I'll start shaking at the knees!

It seems that our Californian friend Thomas seems to believe that all Australian Pinot Noirs come from the terra rossa in Coonawarra; don't you just love those West Coast Colonials! Fancy some Russian River Pinot at 15% anyone?
