Lucy Margaux Jim's Pinot noir 2010

Uraidla Valley, Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Pinot noir. 13.8%. Diam. Approx $A45

Quite delicious but also idiosyncratic and challenging. Unfiltered and unfined there's a glorious murkiness to the eye. It's richly scented, though the olfactory signature changes and reforms as the night proceeds. It's pretty and floral with crushed strawberries to begin, but later it seems more spiced, earthy and stem laden. Slightly sweet and metallic, the emphasis is forward and the impression is of something globular, concentrated and savoury. Once again spice (ginger and white pepper), zip, mineral and char. It's layered and complex, expansive and a touch warm. Fascinating.

I must admit, I was interested to read your note on this wine Ed. I'm no great fan - I find it (and pretty much all of the Lucci single vineyard wines) simple, too sweetly fruited and over-hyped...the polar opposite of fascinating.

As a wine that I feel is rather less than idiosyncratic, I must admit I am interested in the absence of a score. I would be interested in the reasoning behind this.

cheers

JP,

I'm sniffing at the dregs as I reply.

I liked the wine. I was expecting something potentially faulty and flawed from the various mixed opinions I have read, but it was clean and seemed to possess something different and appealing, while still being true to its place and grape.

I can see what you mean by the sweetly fruited palate, but for me this was only a small facet. I liked the texture and spiciness and thought the sweetness more apparent (sweet texture rather and actual excessive residual sugar) than real. My only slight complaint would be the concluding heat.

Regarding the score. I had put one up (90-92) while drafting the note, but thought it out of place. Far better to hear some lively discussion!
