Spring Vale Gewürztraminer 2010

Freycinet Coast, Tasmania, Australia. Gewürztraminer. 13.5%. Screwcap. Approx $A33.

On the last day of Spring. . .

Convincing and delicious and quite possibly the best local Gewürztraminer I can recall having. A beautiful and bountiful nose of lychee, spice and slate, while in the mouth the texture, flesh and persistent flavours of lychee and rambutan, are capably corseted by fine acidity. It manages to be exuberant without losing its shape. 90-92. Now - 2014.

Aye, not an easy grape to find done well here. Best I have come across were a 2001 Chatsfield gewurtz I got on close out a couple of years back and more recently, one from Rolf Binder called Magpie Estate or summat similar. Both had great acidity, the lack of which I find the issue here with Oz gewurtz, although the last vintage of the RB was a touch better than the current one I feel.

Cheers

Dave,

Getting the perfume right seems to be the easy part, the difficulty seems to come with the shape (in the mouth).
